Somali parliament approves new PM

Somalia’s Transitional Federal Parliament Tuesday endorsed the newly-appointed prime minister, Dr Abdiweli Mohamed Ali.

During the session, the Transitional Federal Government’s (TFG) President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed urged the legislators to endorse the PM he appointed on June 23.

The resignation of the former PM, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, on June 19 and the appointment of Dr Ali to the post less than a week later, had caused a rift within the TFG.

According to the Speaker of the Parliament, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, 437 MPs voted in support while four legislators objected and two abstained.

The new PM was sworn in before Parliament and he is expected to form a Cabinet soon.

Dr Ali promised to form an effective council of ministers that will clear the pending transitional tasks, including the completion of Somalia’s draft constitution and passage from a transitional government to a more permanent status.
